A Buyers Guide to Pool Decking

Is there anything better then taking a dip in the back yard pool during those hot summer days? Being able to dive in, take a swim and then be able get out and relax in the sun.

While this is a fabulous thought, there are many dangers that come from owning a pool. The water in the pool is only part of the danger. The area around it can also pose a number of problems such as slipping, tripping or scrapping.

Things to keep in Mind

When looking at purchasing decking material, you will want to keep a few things in mind. For instance, who will be using the pool (adults or children)? Is the product durable and able to handle water? Is the material slip resistant? And then there is cost.

Pool Decking Materials

Once the hole is dug and the pool installed, it’s time for the decking. Doing the research on what types there are will help you to make a wise and safe decision.

Concrete - One of the most common things used around a pool is concrete. Concrete is very strong, durable and can be made to have a rough enough surface to help prevent slipping but not too coarse. It is also easy to clean and care for.

Plain concrete is no longer the only option. It can be dyed a number of colors and made to look like such things are slate, tile or other patterns.

The only down fall to concrete is that it can get very hot doing those sizzling summer days and burn the bottoms of the feet. Even with that said it does seem to be one of the best choices because of the durability, cost and number of possibilities for designs.

Slate - Slate is a very beautiful choice. However it can be very expensive. The same look can be obtained from concrete for a fraction of the price. Slate is also very durable and will last for a long time.

Composite decking would be another good choice. It is made from recycled plastic and wood waste. This will have a look of wood without all the headaches. Plus, it will not fade, crack or split.

Wood is commonly used in decking on houses but around a pool is a different story. While wood can be sealed to protect it against water seepage, you have to take in account that the decking around a pool will receive a lot of wear. Also, wood can become very slippery.

Things to Avoid

When choosing decking material for your residential swimming pool keep in mind that you will need a non-slip surface. Something that will not be affected by water either by becoming slippery when wet, or by breaking down the integrity of the material.  Also consider Hayward pool filters once you have decided what sort of pool decking your want o buy.

Avoid using things that move or shift over time. These things may pose a tripping hazard.
