There are so many choices when it comes to flooring. There is wood, stone, cork, vinyl, and carpet among others. One that is probably not thought of very often is rubber, at least not for a home.
Environmental Benefits
In today’s world you find a lot of people taking an active role in using recycled and environmentally friendly materials. This trend is growing strong in the area of home improvements. Rubber flooring is a wonderful product because it can be made from recycled materials. It is made from post consumer waste, like tires.
Not all rubber flooring is recycled. Make sure to check if having recycled rubber is important to you.
Other Benefits of Rubber Flooring
- Durable. Rubber is great in high traffic areas because it can withstand a lot of wear and tear. This makes it great for front entries, kitchens and bathrooms.
- Shock Absorber. This makes it easy on the feet and legs. This is another great reason to have rubber floors in areas such as the kitchen where a lot of walking and standing are done while cooking.
- Garages. Another wonderful use for rubber flooring is in the garage. Rubber helps to dampen noises. Its durability is a huge plus for this area because of all the wear and tear from cars, tools, bikes, and kids. Heavy tools can be dropped on it without hurting the floor.
- Exercise Room. If your family has a weight or exercise room, rubber would be the perfect choice of flooring. Again, the durability is unmatched. Weights can be dropped on it without damage. The noise and shock-absorbing qualities will make it easy on the ears along with knees, legs and feet.
- Pets. Don’t forget about the family pets. Placing rubber in a kennel will help your pet’s joints, keep the noise level down, and add a layer of insulation between the concrete and Fido.
- Colors. Rubber is also wonderful because it comes in a variety of colors. The options for colors and textures are incredible. It is easy to find a style that will compliment any room.
- Allergies. Rubber is also great for people who suffer from allergies. Rubber along with other flooring such as wood, natural stone, marble and vinyl do not hold onto allergens like carpets do.
Rubber flooring starts at about $2 a square foot. This is a great price considering its strength and longevity.
Cleaning Rubber Flooring
When caring for any floor, the best place to start is by reading the manufacturer’s instructions. These will tell you the things that can and cannot be used on the floor. If there is a warranty on the floor, you want to pay extra close attention to the care instructions. Using the wrong cleaners on the rubber flooring may void out the warranty.
Rubber floors can be easily cleaned by sweeping and vacuuming. Mild cleaners may also be used along with a mop. Again, check the cleaning instructions provided by the maker.
