How to Buy a Mattress Without Losing Sleep

There are two distinct types of mattresses on the market along with and a few sub-types. Which is best for any individual is, well, individual.  To help come closer to a decision, here is some info on the two most common types available.

Inner Spring

This is the most traditional of the modern styles.  It’s the familiar coil array that fills the interior of millions of mattresses today. In times gone by, they were often weak and prone to sagging. They squeaked shortly after bringing them home. Luckily due to modern materials and manufacturing techniques this once-staid design has gained new life.

Typically the better the material used for the coil the better the mattress will be.  Normally the coil will be made from a 13-gauge steel alloy.  Debates rage between manufacturers about the value of wrapping coils. Whether they are or not, what is important is to reduce the coil shifting sideways when pressed down.  One technique is to tie them together whilst wrapping them has been a technique used for some time too.

The best mattresses will tend to have between 700-1000 coils and normally the more coils the mattress has the better.  Although some very good quality mattresses will have less coils, on average the ones with higher number are more comfortable for a longer period.

It’s not just the coil material and design that affect how durable and comfortable your mattress will be.  You will also need to be aware of layering.  The more layers of thick egg-shell crate foam the better. Each layer will often be made from different materials, with one layer being synthetic foam rubber. The top layer will often be a dense, cushiony latex. You can also have memory foam to form the top layer.

Memory Foam

You will find memory foam under different names depending on the manufacturer.  It’s a space age foam which is pretty new to the world of mattresses.  While the material and its use in mattresses have been around for many years now, still over 90% of mattresses sold are the inner coil type.

Memory foam is becoming increasingly more popular.  You may find it a little different from what you’re used to but it’ll only take a few weeks for you adjust.  You’ll not want to go back to your old mattress!  Made from a type of synthetic rubber that responds to body heat, it gently forms a valley that closely conforms to an individual.

Some people complain that it takes too long to mould to your body, making the mattress appear hard, especially when turning. Others dislike the odor which typically dissipates to nothing after a few weeks. Whilst others simply find it too difficult to adjust to the difference generally.

But given a break-in period, most regard it as a real back-saver. Vive la difference. The material is safe, long-lasting and provides a warm, super-comfortable surface.

Summary

Remember we are all different and this is especially true when selecting a mattress to buy.  Shop around for your favorite, read up on reviews and ask your friends what type of mattress they have.
