Landscaping With Rocks

Rocks have been around since the world was created and are very much part of the landscape today.  There is something so wonderful about looking at rocks.  I don’t know why, they come in so many shapes and sizes plus the way plants grown on them makes look almost magical.  This is why many people are having rocks installed in their gardens.  It’s affordable and certainly helps make a statement.

One of the attractive qualities about natural stone in the almost never-ending varieties, shapes, colours and textures available.  Slate, granite and sandstone are amongst the types of stone you can buy for your garden.  They really make a bold statement and yet are relatively inexpensive.  They can also be used in so many ways.  It might be that you want to make a focal point of it in the same way you would make a focal point of an expensive item of sculpture.  On the other hand you may prefer a more subtle approach by using them sparingly amongst plants.

Whilst you are digging up your garden you may even come across some interesting looking rocks.  Place them to the side and clean them up later for use in the garden.  If you aren’t able to find stone already in your garden you can easily go to either a landscaping supply store or garden centre.  It may surprise you to know that there are also artificial rocks you can buy online.  You can even have engravings made on the stone.

Most gardens have rocks in them but it’s the way you use them which makes all the difference.  If you are going for a subtle approach then making sure the rocks blend in with the landscape is important.  They should look as if they’ve always been there.  You can soften the appearance by planting shrubs and flowers around them.  Stones can also be used as edging for flower beds and foot paths.

When placing rocks in your garden in a natural way, make sure you dig them into the around slightly.  This is how rocks appear in nature; you don’t want them to look like they’ve just been plonked down yesterday.  Not only do they look good but rocks can offer an element of stability for the plants around them.
