When it comes to looking after your home, one issue that people are often worried about is mold.  You will probably already realize how bad mold can be if you allow it to grow in your home.  It’s really bad for the structure of your house and also for the health of the people living in your home.  This is why you need to treat mold as soon as you detect it.

However prevention is better than cure so looking at methods of stopping the mold from developing in the first place is a really good idea.  The main ways of doing this is to use a dehumidifier if there is a problem with high humidity along with using good ventilation.  You also need to make sure that water isn’t getting into your home by means of burst pipes etc.  Something else you ought to look into is mold resistant products.  One such products is mold-resistant drywall.

Normally with drywall you have paper facing for the inner slabs of gypsum.  However with the mold resistant variety fiberglass mat is used.  When it comes to mold, you need to understand that it can feed off just about any material when the conditions are just perfect.  However with the fiberglass, the moisture that mold loves can’t feed on the organic materials it usually does.

Another option you might see available is greenboard.  It’s a type of paper-backed dry wall which is tinted green.  Frequently it’s used in areas where there is a lot of moisture such as in bathrooms.  It’s just drywall with a special paint or cement on top.  It’s cheaper than moldresistant drywal but it isn’t as effective.

It’s easy to think that mold resistant drywall will stop mold from spreading in your home.  Sorry, but this isn’t the case.  Mold resistant isn’t the same as mold proof.  It just reduced the chance of the mold growing compared to the paper-faced drywall.

You can install mold resistant drywall in many rooms in the home however because of the extra cost it’s better that you save it for rooms that have a lot of moisture such as your bathroom, shower room, kitchen and basement.  It’s also more likely that you will use it if you live somewhere that generally has high humidity levels.  You can buy a humidity meter and if it says that it’s more than 50% you need to be very careful about mold growing in your home.
