Ozone Generators

Kills Chemicals and Bacteria. Or Does It?

There is a big debate going on as to the effectiveness of ozone generators as air purifiers. Manufacturers claim that they are a powerful oxidant which kills certain types of chemicals and bacteria. On the other hand, the US Environmental Protection Agency is still evaluating ozone for use as an air purifier.

Ozone and Health

When inhaled, ozone has been found to damage lungs, cause chest pain, throat problems and coughing. If you already have asthma then ozone can prevent your body from fighting infection.

Overdosing on Ozone

When tested, ozone generators have been found to produce too much ozone for the room. It can be difficult to control ozone levels due to many factors including the size of your room, ventilation and how much ozone is outside the room.

Ozone Can Help Produce Chemicals

During tests where ozone was kept within the health safety standards it was found that ozone reacted with certain chemicals creating additional chemicals which are irritating or corrosive.

At the moment I suggest staying away from ozone generators as a form of air purification simply because it is not fully understood. HEPA and ionizers on the other hand have been fully tested and have been found to be effective, so you should look to buying those purifiers instead.
