Sunroom Design Ideas

Sunrooms, solariums or conservatories are brilliant if you want to enjoy your garden but stay warm and dry at the same time.  Sunrooms are built onto your house and are normally situated in the garden.  They allow you to enjoy the beauty and wildlife of your garden without compromising on comfort.

When is comes to choosing a color scheme, shades of off-white work best for creating a calming and relaxing atmosphere.  Sunrooms are generally fairly small so it’s important not to go crazy with bright colors such as red or dark blue.  Also stay away from fussy patterns.  If you want to introduce color into your sunroom you can do so by buying colored cushions, pictures, rugs and vases.  This will prevent your sunroom from looking boring but without being overbearing.

Some people are not into very plain and simple designs.  Instead they like to be inspired by other cultures.  If you are like this, you should have a look at Moroccan, Egyptian and Oriental designs.  You can easily buy home accessories in these styles such as mosaic tables, oriental rugs and light fittings.

If you want your sunroom to feel as if it’s outdoors, one of the best ways you can achieve this is by using decorative lush plants.  This can help give you a feeling of being somewhere tropical.  Please be aware however that sunrooms can get very hot in the summer months so it’s important to choose plants that can withstand heat.  Otherwise you’ll have to remove them when it gets too hot.  If you’re not really into caring for plants you can always buy some artificial plants.  There are some very good and realistic ones available to buy these days most people won’t even realize they are fake!

When choosing plant pots you could try selecting ones which are colourful and have decorative patterns; this will help liven up your sunroom.  There are a couple of ways you can view your sunroom décor ideas.  Either you can go for a very natural and colonial look with lots of natural wood, stone, wicker and bamboo.  Alternatively you could go for something a bit more modern and use painted woods and chrome.  For a relaxing environment, select browns and greens for the outdoor feel.

If you like the idea of being a bit eco, one option you have is to install solar panels to the roof of your sunroom.  The energy from the sun can then be converted into electricity for your home.  This will help reduce your energy bills, particularly in the summer when the sun is at its highest.

If you like the idea of inviting your friends and family over to your home on a regular basis, having a cocktail bar or fridge installed could be a really fun thing to do.  You don’t have to hide it away in a corner either.  It can be the focal point and the alcohol bottles could give a splash of color to your sunroom.  When buying a cocktail bar you might want to choose darker wood for a bit more contrast.

When it comes to sunroom furniture ideas, don’t feel you have to go with the traditional sunroom furniture you find in your local home store.  Ultimately your sunroom is just another room in your house so you should feel able to select whatever furniture you think would look good.  You can choose furniture made from all sorts of materials including, wood, rattan, iron and any other material you might find.

Also, you don’t have to use your sunroom to entertain or relax in.  They can be used for just about any purpose including an office, home gym or children’s play room.  How you decorate your sunroom therefore depends on what plans you have for it.  So many people are working for home these days it can be difficult to balance work with home life.  This might be just one of the reasons you have had or are going to have a sunroom built.  They are such flexible rooms that you can have it set up as an office during the day and revert it back to a sitting area in the evening.  It all really depends on how big your sunroom is and what type of furniture you are going to buy.

Another thing you should be aware of when looking for sunroom decorating ideas is to think about the actual style of sunroom you have.  There are a number of different styles so you want to make sure that the exterior matches the interior.  Some sunrooms are very simply designed with straight panels of glass.  Other sunrooms on the other hand have been designed to look Victorian or they have windows that look like they’ve been inspired by a cathedral.

So, when thinking about your sunroom plans, think about how you plan on using this space.  You might not have thought about using it for any other purpose than simply sitting there watching your garden whilst reading a good book.
